If You Live in DC, a Culinary and Wine Trip to Sperryville is a Must

My coworker has been talking a lot about Sperryville. He went there in mid-August and the small town left him a good impression. He raved about Rappahannock Pizza Kitchen and the overall scenery of the drive. When Hurricane Dorian hit the Outer Banks in the first week of September, we had to look for a new weekend plan. Sperryville was on the top of the list.

Located 60 miles west of Washington on the Blue Ridge and Allegheny mountains, the small town became a good contender since it will only take us about an hour and fifteen minutes’ drive. It’s an optimum distance from Washington, DC. We left around 10 AM from Mount Pleasant and arrived at Rappahannock Pizza Kitchen around 11:45 AM. Unfortunately, the restaurant did not open until noon. However, you can go to the store next door where they sell freshly made baked goods, honey, and wine. The pizza here was pretty good. All in-house made, including the sausage. My favorite was the soup, it tasted very French, rustic. The people in this place know how to make a thoughtful pizza meal.

Chester Gap Cellars has a good wine selection as well as an amazing open view of the mountains.

After enjoying our pizza, we went to three different wineries: Quivermont, Little Washington Winery, and Chester Gap. I’m not trying to pick a favourite, but Chester Gap has the best of both worlds — great in-house wine and amazing view overlooking the mountains. There are more wineries and restaurants to explore in Rappahannock County such as the Michelin-starred restaurant The Inn at Little Washington or the Tavern. A weekend getaway to Rappahannock Country is worth the trip.
